Harrington Gin Distillery: an artisan business and a sign of the times

From time to time InformationDaily.TV features video profiles of The New Artisans. Filming at Warner Edwards gin distillery in Harrington, Northamptonshire was hot, hard, thirsty work.

The increasing number of craft or “artisan” businesses is quite simply a sign of the times. Craft businesses are like other micro-businesses, except that their offering will usually include some element of home or hand production. Two men in a garage on a small industrial estate on the edge of town is a micro business. Two men in a barn in Northamptonshire distilling a range of top-end, premium gins, flavoured mostly with locally sourced aromatics, and pushing the corks into the bottles with their own hands, is an artisan business.

There is a growing desire for a “sustainable life” (life affirming, socially and environmentally acceptable, out of the rat race but still within sight of the other rats) among the young and not so young alike. The rude shocks and poor employment prospects that came with the global economic collapse - and the dawning of a new understanding that “we are going to have to work until we die, we can never retire” - all taken together with the realisation that life after “retirement” might well last longer than the “working” part of our life, is encouraging the more entrepreneurially-minded to start bakeries and hand-knitting and jam making and tea-blending and gin distilling businesses, as we will see.
